2002 Ford Explorer A/C Compressor

The Accumulator or Filter Drier should always be replaced when the Air Conditioning System is opened.  (see why)  The Orifice Tube, if equipped, should always be replaced and the Expansion Valve, if equipped, should at least be inspected for proper operation if not replaced.  (see why)

Compressor R&I labor time is 1.1 hours, not including evacuate & recharge.
Air Conditioning (A/C) Compressor – Sample vehicle is a 1999 Ford Explorer 4.0.  Most vehicles will use the same procedures.
Removal and Installation
CAUTION: If installing a new air conditioning compressor due to an internal failure of the old unit, you must carry out the following procedures to remove contamination from the air conditioning system.
If A/C flushing equipment is available, carry out flushing of the air conditioning system prior to installing a new air conditioning compressor.
If A/C flushing equipment is not available, carry out filtering of the air conditioning system after a new air conditioning compressor has been installed..
Install a new evaporator core orifice as directed by the A/C flushing or filtering procedure.
Install a new suction accumulator as directed by the A/C flushing or filtering procedure.
1.  If flushing of the air conditioning system has not been carried out, recover the refrigerant. 2  Remove the air cleaner outlet tube. 3.  Remove the drive belt from the A/C compressor pulley. 4.  Remove the bolts and position aside the power steering reservoir.
5.  Remove the bolts and remove the power steering bracket.
6.  Disconnect the field coil electrical connector.
7.  Remove the bolt and detach the manifold and tube from the A/C compressor.   Discard the O-ring seals.
8.  Remove the retaining pins and position aside the inner fender well splash shield.
9.  Remove the lower A/C compressor bolt and stud.        1.  Remove the bolt.        2.  Remove the nut and detach the bracket from the stud.        3.  Remove the stud.
10.  Remove the two A/C compressor nuts and studs, and remove the A/C compressor.
11.  To install, reverse the removal procedure.     Install new O-ring seals lubricated in clean PAG oil.     If filtering of the air conditioning system is not to be carried out, correctly oil match the system with clean PAG oil. 12.  If filtering of the refrigerant system is not to be carried out, evacuate, leak-test, and charge the refrigerant system.
